Here's just a small sampling of projects completed over the recent past:
Energy Efficiency Projects:
Pulp Dryers – Working with partner Matrix Northwest to dramatically increase the efficiency of Flakt pulp dryers at multiple pulp mills. The pulp dryer is an area of poor steam efficiency due to the steam blow through. Savings of 10-30% medium pressure steam and potential for increased production representing a contribution of 1-5 million dollars/yr per dryer application. To date this innovative technology has been successful at two sites.
Chiller technology has changed dramatically in the last decade. New mechanical chillers are more efficient and reliable, compared with steam jet chillers, steam absorbent chillers, and older mechanical chillers. Analysis of the new options is complex and involves understanding of cooling tower interface, weather, and process needs. Savings – 1-2 MW; $300,000-600,000/yr at two mills have been completed.
Hot, warm, and tempered water tanks – Many mills do not separate the various temperature streams which increase the need for indirect steam heaters. Steam that is saved can be used to generate more power. Savings – 20,000-60,000 pph/yr; 1- 3 million dollars/yr have been identified at several mills through work with our partner EKONO.
Flue gas cooling, continuous blow down heat exchangers, backpressure turbines, hog fuel storage covers, inadequate and missing condensate return are all potentially high return projects. Savings up to $2 million/yr per project.
Recent Work :
CanmetEnergy (division of National Resources Canada) - hired Re-energize to review, revise, and update their energy benchmarking tool for pulp and paper mills. This work will result in a cleaner, more practical, and more accurate model that will rapidly produce actionable and economic energy efficiency projects based on energy benchmarking.
50 MW Bioenergy Power Plant Energy Assessment - worked with partner Jansen Combustion and Boiler Technologies, Inc. to provide energy assessment expertise to their client for Boiler MACT rules compliance. Over $1.5 million/yr of 2 year pay back savings identified.
Dissolving Pulp Mill, South East US - worked with partner Jansen Combustion and Boiler Technologies, Inc. to provide an energy assessment. Over $6 million/yr of thermal savings identified with less than a 1 year payback.
Steel Mill fan and duct reconfiguration - working with partner AirClean Technologies, Inc to save fan horsepower and electricity for a specialized steel mill in the Northwest.
Bandwidth studies - working with Energetics to provide analysis and calculations on thermodynamic minimum energy consumption required for major industries in the US including glass, food and beverage, plastics and cement.
Online Webinars - "Energy Assessments for Manufacturing Plants" through Association of Energy Engineers - four 2 hour sessions presented live for 4 days. Last one was fully booked in December, 2017. Next one in February. Also scheduled for onsite training.
